CORPORATE BACKGROUNDEnergy Components Group was established by Todd Kilgus in August, 2008, to address the need for precision machining, fabrication and assembly of high quality components for the alternative energy industry. Working with the state of Michigan and other public entities, he became aware of key companies in the renewable energy market seeking to leverage Detroit’s reputation for high-volume, high-quality production in a consistently repeatable manner. ECG was able to identify innovative solutions to this new industry’s complex design and manufacturing challenges as well as develop progressive program management. As a result, the company obtained several purchase orders for prototype development of precision machined components and assemblies for their first renewable energy customer in September of 2008. ECG has since become a key partner with the customer in the prototype design process and has secured a Long Term Agreement for production of several of these components. Due to rapid growth in demand, ECG plans to establish a new manufacturing operation and engineering facility. When ECG reviewed plans for the new facility, the company approached the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to assist in identifying potential alternatives and incentives that would support the development of this new facility in the State of Michigan. With the assistance of external advisors, ECG worked with key members of the MEDC, St. Clair Economic Development Authority, Citizens First Savings Bank in Port Huron and the St. Clair City Manager. As a result of this effort, on May 19, 2009, the MEDC approved a package of incentives that provide a MEGA grant and a Renewable Energy Renaissance Zone (RERZ) for the facility to be established in St. Clair, Michigan. This is only the second occasion when a MEGA grant and a RERZ have been offered together in the same incentive package. ECG is planning to establish 250 jobs over the next five years, and invest over $20 million in the new location. The company anticipates continuing to transform its capabilities in precision machining, fabrication and assembly to meet the needs of alternative energy customers and to do so with talent available in Michigan. |
